Detecting mast cell activation from wearable biosignals

Abstract

We evaluate whether mast cell activation events can be reliably detected from continuous wearable biosignals, combining multiple physiological markers to separate genuine activation from ordinary daily variation.

Background

Mast cell activation is episodic and multi-system, which makes it difficult to capture with a single clinical measurement. Continuous wearable sensing offers a way to observe the body's response as it unfolds, rather than after the fact.

Approach

Using signals aligned with the MCT - 1 sensing model — including heart rate, skin temperature, and inflammation-associated markers — we examined whether combinations of these signals track known activation events more faithfully than any single channel alone.

Findings

Implications

These results support continuous, multi-parametric monitoring as a foundation for understanding mast cell activation — and motivate the personalized modeling described in our related work.
